Mileage check Nikon 1 J1: diagnostics of the first Nikon mirrorless camera

Founder of the Nikon 1 system: checking the mileage of the J1

Nikon 1 J1 is a historic camera: the first mirrorless camera in Nikon history, released in 2011 and opening the line with an ultra-compact CX sensor (13.2 × 8.8 mm). The camera amazed the world with its crazy continuous shooting speed - 60 frames per second on the electronic shutter and 10 fps on the mechanical one. Today it is an inexpensive “antique” system that is bought for an exotic collection or a budget mirrorless camera for beginners. However, the age of the camera dictates strict requirements: checking the mileage is mandatory.

More than ten years have passed since the release of J1. During this time, the camera could change many owners. The speed of 10 fps on the mechanics meant that in one evening the photographer could easily “wind up” thousands of frames. The plastic case retains its appearance well. Only the system counter will tell the truth about the real state of the shutter.

Compact sensor and unique Nikon 1 mechanics

The CX sensor size (1 inch) allowed engineers to create a very compact shutter mechanism with miniature shutters. This shutter weighs and moves much faster than its full-frame counterpart, which explains the 10 fps speed. The lifespan of the mechanism is approximately 50,000–70,000 operations - less than that of DSLRs, but quite sufficient if used carefully.

Considering the age of the J1, examples with less than 20 thousand frames are lucky. Most devices have gained 30-60 thousand over the years. Plus material fatigue: the lubricant in the mechanism can dry out regardless of the number of frames.

Nikon 1 J1 frame counter: reading data from EXIF

Despite its modest class, Nikon has integrated a full-fledged software hit counter into the J1. This data is written into the metadata of each image in the MakerNotes block of the EXIF standard. The counter cannot be reset by user means.

To read the mileage, you need the original file from the memory card - in RAW format (.NRW - Nikon 1 specific RAW format) or unedited JPEG. Our service supports metadata analysis of Nikon 1 series cameras.
