Nikon 1 J3 was released in 2013 as a development of the successful J-series line. Featuring an improved 14.2-megapixel CX sensor and improved autofocus, this camera has become a popular choice for family and travel photography. Compact dimensions and excellent operating speed made it attractive for active use. Today the J3 is a cheap retro system, but its mechanics may be in critical condition after many years.

Family photography means thousands of photos taken at birthdays, trips and holidays. An owner who used the J3 as his main camera for several years could easily accumulate 50-80 thousand frames. The plastic body looks fresh, but the internal springs and shutter slats live according to their own laws of physics.

The small size of the CX sensor (1") allowed the use of lightweight shutter mechanics. This is good for speed (up to 15 fps on an electronic shutter, up to 6 fps on a mechanical one), but means a shorter resource compared to APS-C or full-frame cameras. The estimated life of the J3 mechanism is 50,000–80,000 operations under normal operating conditions.

In addition to mechanical wear, after more than 10 years, age-related degradation of lubricants must also be taken into account. Even a camera with low mileage may require maintenance at the service center.

The Nikon 1 J3 processor keeps a non-resettable record of all mechanical shutter operations. The counter is written to the MakerNotes EXIF ​​block of each image. This data is protected from user modification.
