Nikon D40X mileage assessment: diagnostics of an improved popular DSLR
10 megapixels for the price of D40: diagnostics of Nikon D40X mileage
Nikon D40X (2007) is a D40 with an improved 10.2 megapixel sensor and faster continuous shooting (3 fps instead of 2.5). Appearing shortly after the D40, it occupied an even more attractive “maximum for minimum” niche. The audience for the D40X is about the same as the D40 - beginner photographers and family users - which means an equally heterogeneous and unpredictable history of use for used copies.
After twenty years on the market, this is a veteran. Buyers of the D40X today are people who want an inexpensive point-and-shoot DSLR or training camera. But “cheap” does not mean “no problems”: a worn shutter can fail at the most inopportune moment. Checking your mileage is your insurance.
Mechanical life and age-related degradation
The D40X shutter is inherited from the D40 with a guaranteed life of 50,000 operations. Just 20 years ago, this was considered the bottom line for DSLRs. The age of the camera adds a factor to the degradation of lubricants - even with a run of 20–30 thousand frames, prevention is recommended.
