Checking the mileage of a semi-professional tank SONY SLT-A77V
SONY SLT-A77V is not just a camera, it is an armored reporting vehicle in a magnesium body, designed for professionals and harsh operating conditions. Dust and moisture protection, an additional screen, a crazy rate of fire of 12 frames per second - all this made it an ideal choice for wedding, sports and wildlife photographers. It is this “professional” status that makes checking mileage on the secondary market an absolutely critical procedure.
Unlike amateur cameras that sit in a case for years, the A77V worked hard. During one intense wedding shoot, the shutter could fire from 3 to 5 thousand times. Over the course of a year, the camera easily captured 100 thousand frames. Therefore, the perfect appearance of the magnesium case should not deceive you: inside the mechanics can be worn down to dust.
Shutter life at 12 frames per second
Shooting at 12 frames per second is a tremendous test for any mechanical unit. To withstand such stress, Sony engineers developed a reinforced shutter for the SLT-A77V using durable alloys and carbon fiber. This precision movement is officially rated for an impressive 150,000 guaranteed operations.
In practice, these cameras often survive up to 200 or even 300 thousand frames, but this is already a lottery. Buying a used A77V carcass with a mileage of 120-140 thousand frames means purchasing a device “to replace the shutter,” which should greatly reduce its market price. If you find a specimen with up to 50 thousand rounds, this is a great success.
Extracting wear data from EXIF format
Commercial equipment must have a transparent operating history, and Sony engineers took this into account. The central processor of the device keeps a continuous strict record of all physical activations of the curtains. Each movement is added to a non-resettable counter, which is hardware protected from user manipulation.
This counter is quietly embedded in each photo's EXIF metadata (in the utility section of MakerNotes). You won't find it in the file properties in Windows, but with the right parsing algorithms, this information is easily extracted from the original RAW (.ARW) or JPG file.
