A View from the Workshop: The Golden Age of Nikon Mechanics

Over the years of disassembling Nikon cameras at my service center, I have formed my personal reliability rating. The Japanese had both absolute masterpieces of engineering, nursed under a million personnel, and controversial revisions.

Let's remember the most enduring series in the company's history.

1. The “Unkillable” era: Nikon D700, D300s, D3s (2007–2010)

This is the pinnacle of safety margin. In these cameras, Nikon used carbon fiber and titanium shutter blades with the most powerful self-diagnostic electromagnets.

• They still bring D700s to me for sensor cleaning with runs of **600,000 – 750,000 frames**! The shutter is original.
• The D3s had a balancing mechanism for smoothing out the impact of the curtains, thanks to which the lamellas did not break against the damper even when shooting in long bursts.

2. The era of “People's Favorites”: Nikon D90 and D7000

Nikon D90 is the main crop legend. With a passport resource of only 100,000 personnel, in reality 8 out of 10 people coming to My D90 shot **180,000 – 250,000 frames**.

3. Fly in the ointment: The story of the first batch of Nikon D600

We must be honest about mistakes. In 2012, on the D600, due to an incorrect composition of the lubricant of the shutter drive on the matrix microdrops of oil were flying. Nikon acknowledged the defect, replaced the shutter units for free, and then released updated revision D610.
