How do climatic conditions (frost, heat, humidity) affect the life of the shutter?
Climatic overload of photographic equipment
The shutter life declared by the manufacturers is calculated under normal laboratory conditions: temperature **+20°C** and humidity **45–60%**.
However, the photographer's real work takes place in hot deserts, in Siberian frosts (-30°C) or in the damp tropics. How Do extreme weather affect moving shutter curtains?
1. Shooting at low temperatures (Frost below -10°C)
- Factory grease thickening:The grease thickens in the micro-bearings and curtain guides. Shutter works more slowly, maintaining longer intervals, which leads to exposure errors (overexposure).
- Fragility of carbon fiber curtains:At -25°C thin plastic and composite curtain slats become fragile. A drop or sudden release of the brakes can cause the curtain to crack.
2. Danger of condensation when bringing the chamber from cold to warm
The most dangerous enemy of mechanics is **condensation**. When moving a cold camera from outside to a warm room, moisture instantly condenses on the metal of the curtains and springs.
If you immediately turn on the camera and start taking pictures, microdroplets of water will cause a short circuit in the control solenoids valve or cause corrosion.
3. High humidity and tropical climate
In sea air with a high salt content, metal shutter return springs without professional moisture protection becomes covered with microcorrosion, which increases friction during descent.
Table of rules for operating equipment in extreme conditions
| Condition | Shutter risk | Preventive action |
|---|---|---|
| Frost from -15°C and below | Thickening of the lubricant, slowing down of the curtains | Keep the camera under your jacket before shooting |
| Transition frost → heat | Condensation and solenoid shorted | Leave the camera in a closed backpack for 2 hours |
| Beach and sea spray | Sand in curtains and corrosion | Use a protective cover |
