How to Calculate Mileage from a Broken or Damaged RAW File: Metadata Recovery

Damage to image files and rescue EXIF

When reading photos from damaged memory cards or when the battery suddenly runs out during recording file, the photographer may encounter a **broken RAW file (.NEF / .CR2 / .ARW)**.

The file won't open in Lightroom, Photoshop, or the system viewer, giving a header corruption error. Is it possible rescue shutter mileage information from such a damaged file?

Why does metadata survive image corruption?

A RAW graphic file is divided into two main sections:

  1. Header/Metadata (EXIF Header and MakerNote):Occupies the first few kilobytes of the file (usually from 4 KB to 128 KB).
  2. Payload (Raw sensor pixel data):Occupies the bulk of the file (20–60 MB).

Since the MakerNote block with gate mileage is stitched at the very beginning of the file (in the header), 90% of the time it fails The header structure remains completely intact!

Step-by-step method for extracting mileage from a broken file

Method 1: Direct dump scan via ExifTool

The `-m` flag allows ExifTool to ignore minor checksum corruption errors and retrieve stored tags:

exiftool -m -ShutterCount Corrupted_File.NEF

Method 2: Upload to our online parser

Our online service uses a fault-tolerant binary parser of the header section. He doesn't need to unpack and decode the entire heavyweight pixel matrix - it reads a `MakerNote` block from the first bytes in 0.05 seconds.

Data recoverability table

File Damage Type Opens in Lightroom? Odometer reading success
The file is half finished (gray underlight) Error or artifacts 100% Success (header intact)
FAT32/exFAT file system errors No 90% Success after Recuva
Complete zero byte dump (0 KB) No Impossible (file is empty)

Is your RAW file damaged or won't open?

Try uploading it to our service. In 9 out of 10 cases we will be able to subtract the exact shutter mileage!
