How to check the camera after repair at a service center: has the mileage been reset?

The main question from clients: “Master, has my mileage dropped to zero?”

When the owner picks up a carcass with a new bolt from repair, the first thing he does is take a frame and load it to our service. And then there is horror in the eyes: * “Master! My mileage was 190,000. They changed the shutter for me, but on the website it’s still since it says 190 001! You deceived me and didn’t change the part?!”*.

Calm! Let's tell you how the counter reset procedure works in official services.

Is the EEPROM counter reset when the gate is replaced?

  1. Official Nikon Authorized Services (ASC):When replacing the bolt block, the engineer connects carcass to the service utility **Nikon Service Program (NSP)**. The service tag is reset in the EEPROM firmware `ShutterCount` to zero (`0`). On new frames, the countdown starts from 1.
  2. Third party service workshops:Unauthorized workshops often do not have a service key EEPROM firmware. The shutter is physically installed completely new, but the electronic counter in the chip continues count further from 190,001.

How to check that a part is really new?

  • Shooting sound:The new shutter operates with a juicy, tight and short click without coasting and metal chatter.
  • Old shutter in a bag:An honest service always gives back a replaced bolt assembly with a torn off curtain in the client's hands!
  • Warranty receipt:Request a work order with the serial number of the installed unit.
