How to find out Sony shutter mileage on Windows and Mac: 4 working methods

Why isn't everything as simple for Sony as for Nikon?

Unlike Nikon DSLRs, where the `ShutterCount` parameter is visible even in the basic file properties viewer, cameras Sony information about the operating time is included in the extended closed section of MakerNotes. If you just open properties JPG file in standard Windows Explorer or Finder on Mac, in the EXIF line you will see aperture, shutter speed, ISO... but there won't be any mileage there.

As a master who has handled hundreds of Sony Alpha cameras, I will talk about 4 real methods for extracting this figure.

Method 1: Online reading via web service (Fastest)

You don't need to install heavy software, console utilities or paid applications. Web Decoding Algorithms directly read MakerNote byte structures (specifically the `ImageCount` or `SonyModelID` tag at offset 0x9050).

  • Take a fresh shot on camera in the formatJPGorARW (RAW).
  • Upload the file to the main page of our service.
  • The system will display the exact number of pictures taken by the sensor/shutter.

Method 2: Using the console utility ExifTool (For advanced)

ExifTool from Phil Harvey is the main program of all service centers in the world. It works on both Windows and macOS.

Instructions for Windows (Command Prompt):

  1. Download `exiftool.exe` and place the file in any folder.
  2. Open a command prompt (cmd) and type:
    exiftool.exe -ImageCount -Sony:ShutterCount "C:\path\to\photo.ARW"
  3. The console will display the value of the `ImageCount` tag.

Instructions for macOS (Terminal):

  1. Install ExifTool via Homebrew:brew install exiftool
  2. In the terminal run:exiftool -ImageCount /Users/username/Desktop/photo.ARW

Method 3: Picture Information Extractor (PIE) for Windows

If you don't like the command line, PIE allows you to view full raw EXIF tags in a graphical interface:

  • Open the desired ARW/JPG file in PIE.
  • Go to the tabMakerNote → Sony.
  • Find the line `Image Count` or `Shutter Count`.

Method 4: Preview through specialized software for Mac (Preview Inspector / GraphicConverter)

On macOS, third-party software GraphicConverter can decode Sony closed structures. On the menuFile → Show Information → EXIF MakerNotesA detailed statement of frame counters will be available.

Important note from the master: Shutter vs Sensor for Sony

Remember that Sony's `ImageCount` value is calculatedall frame exposures. If the previous owner often filmed in Silent Shooting mode (silent electronic shutter), the physical wear of the mechanics will be noticeably less than this numbers!
