Replacing the shutter on Nikon: cost, feasibility and impact on the EXIF counter
Repair prices and realities: Experience of a service engineer
Every week the same dialogue occurs in my workshop: * “Master, the curtain on my D750 is jammed. How much will the repair cost and will the mileage be reset after replacement?”*.
Let's honestly look at the financial and technical side of replacing the shutter unit on Nikon cameras.
1. How much does it cost to replace the shutter on Nikon?
The cost consists of two parts: the price of the original spare part (the bolt assembly) and the service work engineer for complete disassembly of the carcass.
- Amateur crops (D3300, D5300, D5600):Spare part + labor = 8,000 – 12,000 rubles.
- Full frame semi-pro (D610, D750, D780):Spare part + labor = 16,000 – 24,000 rubles.
- Studio flagships (D810, D850):Spare part + labor = 25,000 – 38,000 rub.
- Z-series mirrorless cameras (Z6, Z7):Spare part + labor = 22,000 – 32,000 rub.
2. Is the mileage in EXIF reset after installing a new shutter?
The main intrigue! The EEPROM chip is located **on the motherboard**, not on the gate.
- Replacement at an authorized service center (ASC):Engineer using *Nikon Adjustment service software The Software* orders the replacement of the curtains and **resets the counter in the EEPROM to 0**.
- Replacement in a regular unofficial service:If the technician does not have the Nikon service utility, he changes only a physical block of curtains. In EXIF, the counter **will continue to count the old thousands of frames**! That is, the shutter is new, but 250,000 is written in the frame.
3. Is it advisable to change the shutter on old carcasses?
If the cost of repairing a D90 or D300s exceeds 70% of the market value of the entire camera aftermarket, change the shutter economically meaningless. It’s easier to buy a donor or another carcass. But for D750, D850 and Z6, the shutter is completely replaced justified!
