The future of mechanical shutters: why will Global Shutter soon kill mechanics?

An Engineer's View of the Future: The Decline of the Mechanical Age

In the workshop, I increasingly catch myself thinking: in 10 years, the profession of a valve replacement specialist will be the same a rarity, like repairing typewriters. The revolution we have been waiting for 20 years has happened before our eyes - announced **Sony A9 III with Global Shutter sensor**.

What does this mean for photographers and the renovation industry?

Difference between Rolling Shutter and Global Shutter

  1. Line reader (Rolling Shutter in conventional CMOS):Data is read from the matrix line by line from top to bottom. Because of this, distortions occur when moving (the helicopter propeller becomes crooked, and the pole blurred). That's why we needed a mechanical shutter to freeze the frame!
  2. Global Shutter:All 24 or 45 megapixels are read **simultaneously in one nanosecond**! Mechanical curtains become physically unnecessary.

What awaits service workshops in 5 years?

The flagships **Nikon Z9, Z8** and **Sony A9 III** have already proven that without a mechanical shutter the camera works faster (shooting up to 120 frames/sec), has no vibrations and **will never require replacement of curtains for 25,000 rubles**.

Bolt system evolution table

Shutter generation Operating principle Reliability and resource
Mirror mechanical shutter Curtains + Mirror lift (D850) Resource 100k – 200k frames
Mirrorless shutter + EFCS 1 mechanics + Electronic curtain (Z6 II) Resource 200k – 300k frames
Global Shutter 100% Electronic at the same time (Sony A9 III) Lifetime (0 mechanical parts)

As long as your camera uses a mechanical shutter, keep an eye on its wear and tear!
