What to do if Nikon shows 0 or incorrect mileage: possible causes and solution
A case from service practice: “The service produced 0 frames!”
Yesterday a guy with eyes worth five kopecks came to my service: * “I looked at the Avito D610, uploaded the photo to the site, and it says - 0 frames! The seller assures that he did not twist it. Is this a glitch or are they trying to fool me?”*.
Let me, as an engineer without water, lay out all 4 reasons why you see 0 or incorrect numbers when checking mileage Nikon.
Reason 1: Saving a frame via Lightroom or Photoshop (“Save for Web”)
The most common jamb! Before shipping, the seller decided to “improve” the photo or reduce the weight of the frame. When saving via *Save for Web* most graphic editors by default **clean out the service block MakerNote**, leaving only the base shutter speed and aperture.
- Solution:Request the seller to send the original file without processing - pure **.NEF (RAW)** or raw **JPEG straight from memory card**.
Reason 2: Fresh replacement of the system board (Main Board) in the service
If the motherboard in the camera burns out (for example, after being flooded with sea water or a short circuit in the flash), it is replaced with a new one. On a blank board, the EEPROM unit comes from the factory unflashed. If the service did not make the transfer clone from the old board - the shutter will count frames from scratch.
Reason 3: The photo was taken in silent shooting mode on the Z-series
As I already explained in the article about mirrorless cameras, in a number of older third-party online readers the `MechanicalShutterCount` tag is not is read, and the site shows 0 or a dash.
Table of reasons and methods for obtaining real mileage
| Symptom in the report | The real reason | What should the buyer do? |
|---|---|---|
| Shows 0 frames | The file was run through Photoshop (EXIF cut out) | Request original NEF from flash drive |
| File format error | File saved via messenger (WhatsApp/Telegram) | Send the file as a “Document” without compression |
| Different mileage on sites | Confusion between Total and Mechanical on the Z-series | Use a specialized service |
Do you doubt the correctness of the data from the seller?
Upload the frame source to our service - our engine can recover data even from partially damaged headers.
