Professional Nikon D800 diagnostics: shutter mileage using EXIF
Legend of studios and landscape painters: diagnostics of Nikon D800 mileage
When Nikon introduced the D800 with a phenomenal 36 megapixels in 2012, the photography world froze. For many professionals, this was a game changer: medium format resolution at the price of affordable full frame. The D800 instantly became the standard for commercial, studio and landscape photography. Today, when the camera has long been considered a “classic”, it remains a sought-after tool on the secondary market - and requires a thorough check of the mileage before purchase.
It is worth considering that the D800 was produced in two versions: the standard D800 and the D800E (without an AA filter). The latter is especially valued by landscape painters and architects for its even greater detail. On the secondary market there are specimens with very different histories: from carefully used by amateurs to “killed” in studios. Knowing your exact mileage is your main tool for objective assessment.
36 megapixels and wear on the shutter mechanics
Ultra-high resolution places increased demands on the shutter. The slightest wear and tear (wear of the guide curtains), which remains unnoticeable on a 24-megapixel matrix, can appear on a 36-megapixel matrix in the form of a microshake - the finest lubricant from the vibrations of the mechanism. Nikon officially declared the D800 shutter life to be 200,000 guaranteed operations.
Professional services note that these valves are extremely reliable. Cases of up to 400,000 frames are not uncommon. But if you're looking for a D800 for studio work with 36-megapixel detail, the condition of the shutter is of paramount importance: a camera with over 250,000 miles deserves a thorough inspection by a service center before purchasing.
Extracting mileage information from Nikon NEF files
The EXPEED 3 processor keeps a constant internal counter of all physical shutter activations. This value is automatically built into the structure of every NEF (RAW) or JPEG photo. No user reset will erase this data.
The ShutterCount tag is located in the utility section of MakerNotes. Standard image viewers do not display this information. For diagnostics, you will need the original, untouched RAW file (.NEF) from the memory card - this is what contains the full, uncompressed package of manufacturer metadata.
