45 megapixels in a mirrorless camera: Nikon Z7 mileage diagnostics

Nikon Z7 is Nikon's technological manifesto in mirrorless photography. A phenomenal 45.7-megapixel back-illuminated sensor, 5-axis optical stabilization, a new Z mount with a record aperture ring - all this has attracted professional studio and landscape photographers from the world of SLR cameras. It is for them that purchasing on the secondary market requires special care.

The ultra-high resolution of the matrix places stringent demands on the shutter condition. Even slight wear of the guide curtains, which remains unnoticeable on a 24-megapixel camera, can appear in the form of micro-smear on a 45-megapixel camera - a subtle drop in sharpness due to vibrations of the mechanism. Buying a Z7 with high mileage and less than ideal shutter condition means you won't get everything you pay for.

Nikon installed the same mechanism in the Z7 as in the Z6, with an official resource of 200,000 guaranteed operations. In typical studio or landscape photographer use (thoughtful shooting without long bursts), the shutter lasts a very long time. Experience shows that many copies work beyond the 300 thousand mark.

Key note about the Z7: Due to the high resolution of the sensor, users often shoot in electronic first-curtain shutter (EFCS) or fully electronic shutter mode to eliminate shutter shock. In these modes, the mechanical counter does not increase. Therefore, when purchasing a Z7 with “low mileage,” it is important to clarify which shutter mode was used: actual physical wear and tear may be higher.

Extracting odometer from Z7 RAW files

The EXPEED 6 processor in the Z7 keeps strict records of mechanical shutter triggers. This data is hardware protected from zeroing and is written to the structure of the generated file with each snapshot.

The ShutterCount tag and its variants are located in a closed EXIF-standard MakerNotes block. For diagnostics, you need the original NEF file from the memory card - without intermediate processing in Lightroom or Capture NX-D, which can modify the service sections of the file.
