Checking the mileage of the iconic FUJIFILM X-Pro2 reportage camera
FUJIFILM X-Pro2 is a modern classic. A camera with a unique hybrid optical-electronic viewfinder, designed specifically for photojournalists, documentarians and hardcore street photographers. Made in the style of rangefinder cameras and protected from the elements, it has become a real fetish for many professionals. However, the specific genres in which the X-Pro2 is used makes buying it on the secondary market quite risky.
Street photographers don't skimp on their cameras. The X-Pro2 is worn without a case, rubs against clothes, works in the rain and takes thousands of shots offhand. The metal case can become covered with a noble “patina” of abrasions, which many even like. But inside there is a precision mechanical shutter, the wear of which is a key parameter that determines the real cost of a used device.
The endurance of the mechanism and the specifics of the work of a street photographer
Fuji engineers have equipped the X-Pro2 with a new mechanical shutter capable of ultra-fast shutter speeds of up to 1/8000 of a second and shooting bursts of up to 8 frames per second. The declared resource of this node is 150,000 guaranteed operations. This is an excellent indicator confirming the professional status of the camera.
In practice, these shutters are very reliable and often lasted 200-250 thousand frames. But if you buy a car with a mileage of 120-140 thousand, it is worth keeping in mind that the warranty life is already close to exhaustion. Buying such a copy makes sense only if there is a significant discount. The ideal option for purchase is considered to be a range of up to 50 thousand frames.
Extracting wear data from a hidden MakerNotes block
As with all of Fujifilm's professional line, the X-Pro2 processor keeps meticulous records of all physical shutter activations. This log is reliably protected from changes by the user and is not reset when the camera is reset to factory settings.
A Shutter Count is automatically written to MakerNotes deep system tags in EXIF format for each frame taken. Regular viewing programs cannot extract this information. To accurately determine the mileage, you will need the original, untouched RAW file (.RAF) directly from the camera’s flash drive, or an in-camera JPEG.
