PENTAX K-r mileage diagnostics: checking an old DSLR using EXIF
Why check the mileage of the bright old PENTAX K-r
Released back in 2010, the PENTAX K-r DSLR quickly gained popularity thanks to its combination of an affordable price, an excellent 12.4-megapixel sensor and a phenomenal speed of 6 frames per second for its time. Like many Pentax cameras, it came in a huge variety of colors. Today K-r can be bought for nominal money, and it is an excellent ticket to the world of photography. But her age dictates strict rules when buying second hand.
In a decade and a half, the camera could change five or six owners. It could be used as a family camera, or it could work in a photography school, where its mechanics were not spared at all. The external condition of the body on cameras of this age rarely correlates with the condition of the shutter. Therefore, checking the system mileage is the only way not to buy a “dead” device.
Mechanical resource and problems of the budget series
The K-r bolt group, although capable of delivering 6 frames per second, was originally designed for amateur loads. The approximate resource of this mechanism is 70,000 - 100,000 operations. The problem with old cameras is not only mechanical wear (abrasion of the guide curtains), but also the banal aging of materials.
Aperture control gears (a known problem with old Pentaxes) and shutter springs lose their properties over time. If you find a K-r with a range of about 20-30 thousand frames, this is a great success. If the figure exceeds 70 thousand, the purchase makes sense only for a very modest amount, since replacing the shutter will cost twice as much as the camera itself.
Pentax honest log: how to extract data from photos
Pentax has always been honest with its users. The K-r processor has a non-resettable program counter built into it, which adds up to each physical shutter release. This indicator is securely encrypted in the EXIF metadata service tags of each saved image.
It is impossible to reset this log using homemade methods. No wires or workshop visits are required for testing. You only need the original file (preferably DNG/PEF or unedited JPEG) recorded by this camera on a flash drive.
