Diagnostics of shutter mileage SONY ILCE-7RM2 (A7R II) online
Why check the mileage of SONY ILCE-7RM2 before purchasing
SONY ILCE-7RM2 (Alpha 7R II) is a landmark camera that revolutionized the industry with its 42.4 megapixel back-illuminated sensor. This is a tool primarily for landscape, studio and advertising photographers where the ultimate in detail is required. Unlike reportage cameras, the A7R II is rarely used for long burst shooting, so aftermarket mileage is usually not stellar. However, the specificity of ultra-high resolution is such that it mercilessly exposes any technical flaws, including microvibrations from a worn shutter mechanism.
A camera costs a lot of money, and when buying it secondhand, you must be sure that the mechanics are in perfect condition. If the shutter is “tired”, the slats may move unevenly, which on 42 megapixels will instantly result in micro-smear (shutter shock) or streaks at short shutter speeds. The only way to assess the degree of wear is to check the accurate frame counter.
Mechanical life and features of the Alpha 7R II shutter
Mindful of the problems with the loud and harsh shutter of the first version of the A7R, Sony engineers completely redesigned the mechanics for the ILCE-7RM2. This model has a new bolt assembly with an improved braking (damping) system. The officially declared shutter life for this model is 500,000 operations. This is a colossal figure, indicating the highest reliability of the mechanism.
In practice, if the shutter has worked for 100-150 thousand frames, this is considered a “break-in” for this camera. However, do not forget that electronics also have their service life. In addition, frequent use of the camera in cold or dusty conditions can shorten the life of the mechanics, even with a short mileage. Therefore, the EXIF figure is a starting point for assessing condition and is not an absolute guarantee.
Extracting frame count from EXIF metadata
As in professional SLR cameras, the Sony ILCE-7RM2 keeps a strict log of mechanical shutter activations. The BIONZ X's CPU meticulously captures every shutter movement and records the current value in a hidden MakerNotes block that is part of each shot's EXIF metadata.
This information is protected from user intervention. It cannot be reset through the camera menu or reset by formatting the memory card. To find out the mileage, you need the original file from the camera. The RAW (.ARW) format is ideal because it is guaranteed to contain a complete and untouched version of the EXIF data.
